Other provinces or regions in South Africa have recreational hunters’ associations, game
ranchers’ associations, clay-target shooting associations etc, all as seperate entities. In the
Eastern Cape, there is one association that hosts all role-players in the safari industry,
namely East Cape Game Management Association (ECGMA). It was established in
1980, and total membership counts at well over 1200 members, of which the majority
are recreational hunters. The latter division has branches in various regions.
Way back in 1984, ECGMA was the initiator of the concept of catalogue game sales in
South Africa (and in Africa, for that matter), an example followed by the entire game
industry in Southern Africa. With the advent of the implementation of the new Firearms
Control Act in 2004, ECGMA had its staff members trained and registered as assessors
and moderators, and firearm training of members (and non-members) are done almost on
a daily basis. ECGMA has developed a shooting range for training purposes (accredited
by the SABS to 200m).
Besides a number of objectives as defined in ECGMA’s Constitution, it strives to excel in
two main objectives, namely service to our members and representation of our
members on provincial as well as national levels.
